Roles and Responsibilities
The assessment considers potential environmental, health, social and economic effects of proposed projects, including both positive and adverse effects. Potential impacts on Indigenous peoples and their rights are also assessed and consulted on. Primary roles and responsibilities include those for:

Proponent:
- Provides clarifications to the Agency as required
- Participates in public engagement
- Participates in consultation sessions with Indigenous groups and in the assessment of impacts on Indigenous rights, as appropriate
The Agency:
- Reviews and analyses the proponent’s Impact Statement
- Prepares the draft Impact Assessment Report and potential conditions
- Collaborates with Indigenous groups in preparing the Crown record of consultation
Indigenous Groups:
Indigenous groups contribute to or may collaborate with the Agency on sections of the draft Impact Assessment Report, including the Crown record of consultation, and potential conditions relevant to the group.
Other Jurisdictions:
Other jurisdictions collaborate with the Agency to conduct a cooperative process, where possible.
The federal authorities:
- Review /analyse the Impact Statement
- Provide specialist or expert information or knowledge within their areas of responsibility
- Contribute to the Impact Assessment Report and potential conditions, as applicable
- Participate in engagement with Indigenous groups to understand issues raised and to contribute to the assessment of potential impacts on Indigenous peoples and their rights, related to their mandate
Public:
The public reviews and provides comments on the draft Impact Assessment Report and potential conditions.
