Roles and Responsibilities
The Agency provides the proponent with clear requirements for the information and studies for an Impact Statement. Science and Indigenous knowledge inform the Impact Statement. Primary roles and responsibilities include those for:

Proponent:
The proponent prepares the Impact Statement based on the Tailored Impact Statement Guidelines and submits it to the Agency.
The Agency:
- Reviews the Impact Statement to determine if the requirements of the Tailored Impact Statement Guidelines are met
- Implements actions outlined in the Public Participation Plan, Indigenous Engagement and Partnership Plan, and the Impact Assessment Cooperation Plan
- Requests information from the proponent if the Impact Statement does not provide all information required in the Tailored Impact Statement Guidelines
Indigenous Groups :
Indigenous groups review the proponent’s Impact Statement to ensure all information and studies outlined in the Tailored Impact Statement Guidelines are included and to help ensure that Indigenous knowledge, concerns and perspectives, including, where possible, information on potential impacts on rights of Indigenous peoples, are accurately documented.
Other Jurisdictions:
Other Jurisdictions, including provincial, territorial or Indigenous jurisdictions, review the proponent’s Impact Statement to provide feedback on whether all information and studies outlined in the Tailored Impact Statement Guidelines, and related to their areas of responsibility, where appropriate, are included.
Federal Authorities:
Federal authorities (expert federal departments) review the proponent’s Impact Statement to ensure all information and studies outlined in the Tailored Impact Statement Guidelines that are within their areas of expertise or responsibility are included and to determine whether they have the information necessary to conduct their analysis.
Public:
The Public reviews the proponent’s Impact Statement to provide views on whether all information and studies outlined in the Tailored Impact Statement Guidelines are included.
More information: Lifecycle regulators have roles throughout the process, for designated projects that they regulate. They collaborate with the Agency through an integrated assessment process that meets the Impact Assessment Act and their own regulatory requirements, as appropriate.
