Item 1

An impact assessment is a planning and decision-making tool.

Item 2

There are several principles for impact assessment, including certainty and predictability, sustainability, and the protection of the environment, communities, and the rights of Indigenous peoples.

Item 3

The impact assessment process requires and benefits from the participation of proponents, federal authorities, lifecycle regulators, Indigenous groups, the public, and other jurisdictions.

The impact assessment process includes: Phase 1 – Planning, Phase 2 – Impact Statement, Phase 3 – Impact Assessment, Phase 4 – Decision-making, and Phase 5 – Post Decision.

Item 5

Two key Regulations to be aware of throughout the impact assessment process are: 1. Physical Activities Regulations, and 2. Information and Management of Time Limits Regulations.

Item 6

There are two types of impact assessments: those led by the Agency, and those led by a review panel – each of these have specific cooperation mechanisms. An impact assessment led by the Agency can be substituted by the process of another jurisdiction.
